Initiated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO) in the Belt and Road Region was officially formed in November 2018, and CUHK was the only institution from Hong Kong to join the Alliance with another 35 founding members.
The ANSO is an international, non-profit and non-governmental scientific organization that aims to identify and address common issues in the Belt and Road Region to tackle world scientific challenges. It organizes international conferences, workshops and forums for promoting academic communication, and addressing issues like climatic change, eco-environmental protection, food and water security, health and infectious diseases, prevention and mitigation of disasters, and other important science and technology areas, as well as technology transfer.
CUHK signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ningxia Medical University, China in August 2019 on strengthening academic collaboration and exchange in education and research on biomedical science and integrative medicine. It is hoped that both academic and research collaborations, including the application of Chinese medicine in the areas of regenerative medicine, neuroscience and reproductive medicine, could be facilitated.
Under the MOU, CUHK has been organized an annual “Belt and Road & Greater Bay Area Chinese Medicine Training Programme” since the summer of 2019. The one-week programme targeted at participants from local and mainland in Chinese medicine specialization. The programme aims to bolster sharing and exchanges among participants in both basic and clinical Chinese medicine, enhance basic research and clinical application of Chinese medicine, and to promote the continuing development of Chinese medicine by expanding the research network of participating scholars.
CUHK joined the ASIA-International Biomedical Science Consortium (the Consortium) in 2012. In December 2018, the Consortium was renamed as the Pan-Asian Biomedical Science Consortium (PABSC), with its memberships expanded from 11 to 18 tertiary and research institutes from China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam.
The mission of the consortium is to promote research and academic collaborations in the area of biomedical sciences in Southeast Asia. The President of PABSC is elected biennially from one of the participating institutions, and the new President is in charge of organizing the Biennial PABSC Conference.
The University joined the University Alliance of Belt and Road (UABR) in 2016 with an aim to explore the latest transnational talents nurturing mechanism, and to train talents with global view. UABR was first established in October 2015 by 47 institutes from 8 countries, and currently consists of 126 member universities.
Established in 2015 by Xi’an Jiaotong University, China, the University Alliance of the Silk Road (UASR) is a non-governmental and non-profit organization aimed at openness and international cooperation in higher education. By building collaborative platforms in higher education, the UASR advances institutional exchanges and partnerships on the Sild Road routes in terms of talent education, scientific research, cultural dissemination, policy studies, and medical service etc.
CUHK joined the UASR in 2016 and now, the Alliance attracted members of over 150 universities from 38 countries and regions.
